The Write Stuff

Resolve to Write Better
I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions, since few are kept past January, but here are four things I suggest you remember in 2014:
- “It’s” is always short for “it is” and should not be used as a possessive (when “its” is appropriate). It’s always a good bet to give my niece a Sephora gift card. Sephora has smartly marketed its brand to appeal to women and teens.
- Numbers 10 and over shouldn’t be spelled out and when they’re combined with a time designation to modify a noun, they need a hyphen. I’ll have a 13-year-old nephew very soon. He shares my frustration about the Cubs’ 105-year championship drought.
- It’s worth checking to ensure you spell people’s names correctly. If I had $1 for every time I received an e-mail or letter addressed to Adrian, Adriene, Andrian or any other misspelling of Adrienne, I could have retired by now.
- It’s common courtesy to confirm receipt of e-mails containing important information, such as completed work, invoices, meeting schedules, etc. Don’t make the sender wonder whether you got the message; be proactive and respond with a quick confirmation.
I hope you’re having an enjoyable holiday season and looking forward to a healthy and prosperous 2014.
Purple It Is
As announced recently on “The Today Show,” Pantone has chosen Radiant Orchid as the hottest color of 2014. Described as a shade of purple with fuchsia and pink undertones, the versatile color will be available in everything from clothes and shoes to furniture and paint. Power to the purple! Wonder where I discover many of the purple items I possess? Try The Purple Store, where you can find just about anything you might need in this royal color.
Change the Game
The Servant Leadership Institute’s 4th annual Winter Conference, “Changing the Game,” will take place in downtown San Diego on Feb. 4 and 5. Leaders from around the country will attend this exciting event to learn how to implement servant leadership at their organizations–leading for the sake of others. The early bird price is available through Jan. 1 and the conference is expected to once again sell out, so save your place before it’s too
